Disney’s fame began way back in the early 1930s, marking the golden age of animated movies. But unfortunately, Disney couldn’t translate the movie’s beauty into video games until the Renaissance Era during the 1980s. Since then, developers flooded the market with countless Disney games covering multiple genres, taking advantage of the hugely vast source material.

Starting from the legendary Ducktales on the Nintendo Entertainment System all the way up to modern classics titles like the Kingdom Heart series, there is a lot to enjoy through the history of Disney games. Today, we are here to deliver you a list of our best Disney games ever. Covering multiple genres and wide eras of gaming history, starting from the third generation of consoles all the way up to the last ninth generation.

World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck was a classic 2D platformer title, developers paid extra attention to the animation since it’s a Disney adaptation offering one of the greatest if not the greatest pixel art style and animation to date. Not to be confused with the legendary Castle of Illusion, although the game is a 2D platformer the overall feel and gameplay are totally different. The game offers both a solid single-player experience and the ability to play the game with a friend, adding Donald Duck as the title show.

The player proceeds through a variety of different levels where the main focus on each stage is of course illusion, developers made sure to throw some Easter eggs for hardcore Disney fans with several elements from old-school movies like Alice in Wonderland, The Sword in The Stone, and many more. While this sequel did not get the fame of its predecessor it’s still an underrated hidden gem that got overlooked during its time, I’m sure hardcore Disney fans need no introduction to this game but let’s hope our beloved casual players discover the game through this humble list.

Disney's DuckTales: Remastered

Way before Sega took the lead with titles like Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion, the NES was the go-to if you want to enjoy some solid Disney games. Disney’s Ducktales put you in the shoes of our beloved Uncle Scrooge, as he ventures around the world searching for five different treasures in order to increase his fortune.

Seen from a side-scrolling perspective, the game offers a 2D platforming experience where you control Uncle Scrooge through various levels, jumping from one platform to the other and defeating various enemies. Scrooge can use his cane to defeat enemies, crush treasure chests, or even use the cane as a Pogo stick to reach higher areas. On the whole, this is a must-play by any Disney fans the game marked the beginning of an era and still holds up to this very day, however, if you don’t like Retro games you can enjoy the remake under the name of Disney’s DuckTales: Remastered.

The first Kingdom Heart captured the heart of many gamers during their childhood with an amazing story and gameplay, and one of the biggest game collaborations featuring characters from both the world of Disney and the Final Fantasy series. The first game follows the story of Sora a young boy who is on a journey to find his missing friend and save the world. One of the strongest aspects of the game besides the story is the combat system.

Players can directly control Sora as he engages adversaries thanks to the game’s real-time action-based fighting system. In addition to using things to aid Sora on his journey, players can also use magic spells, special skills, and abilities. Overall, this first entry is a must-own for any fan who is trying to put his first step on this gigantic franchise, while the game is a bit rough around the edge I’m sure you can find tons of ways to enjoy the game in HD including the ports released on both the PS3 and Steam.

Previously mentioned in the list, Ducktales Remastered is a full-blown remake of the awesome original NES game. The game borrows a lot from the original formula while adding new aspects like Metroidvania elements and HD 2D hand-drawn graphics. Just like in the original game, the player controls Scrooge as he ventures into different worlds looking for treasures. Scrooge can navigate the levels by moving back and forth and jumping from one platform to the other. Uncle Scrooge can also use his cane a pogo stick to stomp on enemies or even perform higher jumps to reach elevated areas. As I mentioned above on the list if you’re more into modern games this is the best way to experience the game.

Every level offers a decent array of enemies to defeat, which eventually ends with a boss fight against one of the seven Masters of Illusion.  Overall, this is a solid title that still can be enjoyed to this very day. Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is another NES classic following the iconic squirrel duo chip and dale. The story follows the duo as they investigate a mysterious robot outbreak in the neighborhood, where they must find the mastermind behind all of this. Just like the previous games on the list, this is a 2d platformer to the core, you can approach the game solo or co-op with a friend. Chip and dale can walk, jump, and collect various items to help them in their journey.

Unique to the game is the attack layout, instead of the traditional jump and stomp method used in other classic platformers at the time, the game encourages the player to use various items as projectile weapons. For example, the player can use crates, balls, or even apples to defeat the robots. On the whole, the game is well presented with solid gameplay, amazing stage design, and some of the most iconic and catchy 8-bit music at the time.

Not to be confused with Capcom Disney’s Aladdin, this is a whole different game developed by Virgin Games. The game is a side-scrolling action platformer, unlike the Capcom game Aladdin here can use his sword for short-ranged attacks and of course apples as a long-ranged attack. Mostly the levels are linear, Aladdin must jump his way through ledges and slash down incoming enemies to reach his goal. Graphic wise the game was one of the first video games to use hand-drawn animation which was taken by ten skillful animators. Overall, the game is a classic offering amazing gameplay that still holds up to today’s standards and some wonderful art styles that put many 2D modern games to shame. If you want easy access to the game you can check the Steam or GOG store to enjoy the game on any PC.

Disney’s The Lion King follows the iconic journey of our beloved hero Simba. The game offers a solid 2d platformer game with beautiful pixel art visuals and very fun and engaging gameplay. The Lion King offers the full story of the movie, where you control Simba both in the kid and adult phases.

The player can stomp on enemies and jump from one platform to the other, the classic way. The game was released for many platforms as shown in the box, differing both in quality and graphic design. If you want to revisit this beautiful game for nostalgia, I hugely recommend the Sega Genesis version as it represents the perfect port compared to other versions.

Disney’s The Jungle Book took a different approach, with western developers instead of a Japanese team. Just like in the classic movie, the player controls Mowgli, a young boy who has been raised by wolves. As always, the main focus of the game is platforming, Mowgli jumps from one platform to the other climbing ropes and defeating various animals.

Mowgli can throw bananas to defeat the animals and also his acrobatic skills to avoid enemies encounter if needed. Aside from the solid gameplay, the game also offers some fantastic visuals that still amaze me to this very day. As always, if you want to revisit this beautiful game, the Genesis version is hugely recommended.

Disney’s Goof Troop took a different approach with an isometric view, offering a light-action puzzle game. Developed by the legendary Capcom studio, the game was one of the first games designed by Shinji Mikami way before working on the iconic Resident Evil series. The game can be played both solo or co-op controlling one of the two father-and-son duos, Goofy or Max.

The goal of each stage is to take advantage of the environment in order to solve various puzzles. Although the duo can’t engage opponents directly, the player can use various items to use as a projectile to defeat the enemies. Overall, this is a solid title with a different idea compared to the typical 2d platformers, if you want to enjoy a 16-bit co-op game for the sake of nostalgia I hugely recommend this gem.

The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse is another flawless Capcom release; as always, the creators were able to perfectly capture the cheerful mood and atmosphere of the Mickey Mouse universe. The game once more tells Mickey’s story as he explores a strange new world and attempts to save his friends from the grasp of the evil Emperor Pete.

The game is known for its unique outfit system where mickey can change and upgrade different outfits, each costume offers a different power that can be used to defeat the enemies. For example, the sorcerer’s outfit can make Mickey shoot magical bolts toward the enemies, while the mountaineer outfit helps him with climbing walls.

Although the SNES version was outstanding, the game was re-released on the Game Boy Advance with updated content and some minor tweaks. For people who want to revisit the game after years, the Game Boy Advance version is hugely recommended, if you want to experience the game for the first time I still hugely recommend the original release.

Gargoyles features one of the greatest pixel art visuals of the era together with a dark, gritty atmosphere and, of course, a soul-crushing challenge for retro lovers, making it one of the best-looking games on this list. The game is based on a well-known Disney animated series following the adventure of Goliath, a cursed Gargoyle who is bound to sleep during the day and become alive during the night.

The player can control Goriath during each level where he can jump, attack, and flap his wings to reach higher areas, the enemies vary in difficulty but mostly you beat them down using your sharp claws. The game offers some well-detailed stages where you can climb and jump from one platform to the other, together with some light puzzle elements. This game might be your next pick if you like some old-school challenge mixed with a gloomy mood and some classical music.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid is one of the most underrated platformers on the NES consoles, developed by Capcom the game was bound to be a big success way before its release. Following the movie story, the game tells the story of Ariel a little mermaid who takes on a journey to save her fellow fish and the sea from the evil sea witch Ursula.

The player control Ariel as she ventures into the vast ocean, Ariel can swim across the level where she can use her tail to send a bubble against other creature in order to turn them into bigger bubbles. Ariel can hold down the bigger bubble and use it as a projectile to defeat other foes. The player can also open up their chest to acquire powerups that give Ariel a longer range or even stronger bubbles.

While the formula seems extremely simple and it is, the amazing execution and the cutesy art style make up for it big time. If you want to enjoy an old-school NES title without getting frustrated with the crushing Retro difficulty, The Little Mermaid is a fair bargain.

Disney’s Hercules follows the same path as the movie telling the tale of the young Hercules. Seen from a 2D perspective the player control Hercules as he ventures into 10 different stages defeating Titans and eventually confronting Hades. Hercules is capable of striking opponents with his fist, throwing boulders at them, or even slashing them with his sword. While every studio was experimenting with 3D when the game was published on the PlayStation 1, the game maintained the traditional methods with a 2d graphic style and hand-drawn background, which has retained its appeal to this day.

Each boss has a pattern and unique weaknesses that must be found. After finishing a level the player can use the money collected to upgrade his plane capabilities and move on to the next level. Overall, Disney’s Talespin is a solid title both on the mighty NES and even the Game Boy port.

The levels, which are based on several Disney animated cartoons, take place at various points in Mickey Mouse’s history. The player can control Mickey as he moves and jump between platformer while performing a base jump attack or even using projectiles as ranged attacks. The game is considered one of the greatest 16-bit era Disney games by many fans, and it visually holds up very well in 2023 if you’re willing to overlook some dated controls.

Disney’s Tarzan might appear to be your average licensed game, but if you’re prepared to take a chance, there is more to learn. The game took huge inspiration from the classic Donkey Kong Country game. Seen from a 2D perspective the game offers a 2.5D graphic design with 2d platforming elements. The player can jump, grab and swing from one tree to the other while attacking enemies using his melee weapon.

In addition, there are treasures, bonuses, and collectibles to be found on every level. Although I completely agree that a 3D game from the PS1/N64 period is outdated in visuals, the side-scrolling perspective gives this game a 2D vibe, which has helped it stand out even now despite its old graphics. What are you waiting for if you like Donkey Kong Country and Tarzan? Get this game right away.

Each stage offers various enemies to defeat and some items to collect, in addition at the end of each stage, there is of course a boss fight. Donald Duck can stomp, punch and even kick his enemies. Disney · Pixar Wall-E was released on multi-platform differing in quality but I will mainly focus on the official PS3, Xbox360, and PC versions. As the title says the game is an adaptation of a modern classic Wall-E, the movie was a collaboration between two animated movie giants Disney and Pixar. The game follows the story of Wall-E a mysterious robot who lives in a dystopian future with no humans to be found. After years of collecting garbage on the planet Wall-E meet a mysterious robot named EVE who takes him on an enormous journey across the planet.

Mostly the player control WAll-E as he platforms his way through various levels collecting items and looking for other surviving robots who roam the planet. Although the game is very casual with simplistic gameplay, the overall feel and design capture the beautiful atmosphere of the movie and bring it to the world of video games. If you want to enjoy a calm and charming 3D platformer on a quiet evening Wall-E might be your next pick.

Cars 3 Driven to Win is a funny and colorful game, taking inspiration from the third Cars movie, the player control one of many Cars characters in the movie in multiple racing events. The player can participate in normal races where the goal is to reach the finish line first, trick races where performing tricks mid-air is essential, and my favorite battle race where the game borrows elements from classic Kart racing games like Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing.

While many of you might doubt my choice here since it’s a list of the best Disney game ever made, I stick to my choice as this game is strictly made for family time. For any father or uncle who is looking for a good game to play with kids, this is your choice. The simple controls and the casual feel are here and the difficulty is fairly forgiving for younger audiences.

Disney’s G-Force was a nice little surprise for me, the game adapts the setting of the movie holding the same name and translates it into a fine action adventure sci-fi game. As always the game was released on many platforms so I’m focusing only on the consoles and PC release here. Mostly the player control Darwin a highly trained guinea pig who can use his skills to infiltrate many locations and execute spying missions. You can use several gadgets at your service to defeat enemies and navigate the environment.

Some weapons include a plasma gun, a freeze pistol, and an electric whip. Outside of combat, Darwin can platform his way through the levels using a jet pack hovering in the air, or even on foot. The game also adds more to the formula with some light puzzle elements like disabling enemies’ traps, controlling a bug to infiltrate the security and so much more. On the whole, this is a nice little gem that could have been overlooked by many fans since the movie was not that successful. If you want to enjoy a good action-adventure game with a good sense of humor and an interesting cast, this game is yours to pick!

Disney’s Tron Evolution serves as a prequel to the 2010 reboot Tron: Legacy. The game offers a great mix of genres including beat-them-up sequences, racing elements, and 3D platforming. The player controls a robotic figure named Anon, with the help of his acrobatic skills and capoeira-like combat style, the player must navigate through the levels drafting enemies and platforming around. While the main focus of the game is platforming and combat, the game adds more with some light RPG elements and a few occasional racing events. Overall, the game aged very well with fine graphics, an interesting story filling the gap between the movies, and some tight gameplay.

Disney’s Aladdin in Nasira’s Revenge is your typical adventure 3D platformer, the graphics are nothing special to be honest since it was developed for the PlayStation 1, but the gameplay is where this game shines bright. Mostly the player will control Aladdin, seen from a third-person perspective the goal on each stage is fighting down incoming enemies and using ledges and ropes to hop between platforms.

Aladdin can use his sword to slash down enemies including weak foes all the way up to boss encounters. Occasionally the player can also control Abu the monkey which offers a whole different playstyle where you can hop on enemies and climb walls. Likewise, the player can correspondingly play as princess Jasmine, she also has a different playstyle matching her character where the main focus is stealth.

Disney’s The Haunted Mansion reminds me a lot of Luigi Mansion, the game holds the same premise with a few tweaks here and there and its own unique art style and atmosphere. Not to be confused with Eddy Murphy’s The Haunted Mansion movie released later in 2003, this game takes inspiration from a Disney ride holding the same name.  The player control Zeke a young writer who has been deceived to take care of a haunted mansion.

Seen from a third-person perspective the main focus of the game is collecting souls. The player can do this by using a lantern to defeat the ghosts, starting off with a weak attack the player can gain more powerful attacks through the game using the collected souls. The souls can also be used to unlock further doors in the mansion leading to new rooms and so on. In addition, the game also implements some mild puzzle elements where you can use environments and logic to advance in the game. Overall, this is a beautiful game that might have been overshadowed by titles like Luigi Mansion at the time, but as some say it’s never late to play a game.

Disney · Pixar Toy Story 3 might be the perfect Toy Story video game to this very day. The game was loosely based on the third film adding some elements from Toy Story 2. The story put you in the shoes of many Toys from the Toy Story movie including Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and even some exclusive playable characters on the PSP, PS2, and PS3.

Toy Story 3 maintains an open-world feel where you have the freedom to take on missions from various NPCs. Mission varies in difficulty and quality including fetching quests, defeating enemies, or saving other NPCs. The game offers a good mix of brawling, platforming, and puzzle elements. While the different version of the game varies in term of contents and visuals, both the HD console version and the PSP port are well worth your time if you are willing to revisit the third movie story and ride the nostalgia train.

Disney Infinity 3.0 feature similar gameplay to its predecessor but offers a more complete set with better graphics and an enormous cast. The main focus of this sequel is the Star Wars universe, the player can venture into the world of Star wars reliving the key moments in the saga and defeating the evil Galactic Empire.

The game features open-world gameplay where the player can choose his own adventure, exploring multiple worlds including Star Wars, Marvel, Finding Dory, and so much more. Although the game stick to the same formula as its two predecessors, the combat system was completely redone to match several playstyles like hack n slash, 3d shooter, and third-person shooters. Aside from the single-player experience the game also offers a co-op mode with two players on the same screen and up to four players online.

The toybox mode is also here from the previous games where the player can create his own adventure starring several charachters from the Disney universe. While this game is clearly aimed toward younger audiences, even adults would find something to enjoy here with the kids, especially with the fantastic Star Wars campaign.
