Hell has always been an interesting setting for the entertainment industry, especially gaming. Every video game out there has demonstrated its morbid depiction of hell and its horrors. From the haunting psychological nightmares of Max Payne  to Dante from Dante's Inferno plunging deep into the nine circles of hell, it’s safe to say that when it comes to interpretations, hell can be portrayed in many different ways.

Gamers have been to hell numerous times, and they’ve come victorious out of it. However, moments of their experiences are still cemented into their memory. Today we’ll be diving into a complete list of hell games or a setting that is similar, like the underworld, purgatory, or simply a fiendish world. If you don’t care about the best hell games and just want to discover a page that encompasses a complete list of games set in hell, then you’ve come to the right place.

Note: The list will continue to get updated with more games as soon as we find new ones that fit in. If you have any suggestions, let us know.

The first game in the Actraiser franchise was lauded as a masterpiece, thanks to its fine blending of action side-scrolling with God game perspective sequences where players could build the world how they see fit. The second game drops that feature, focusing instead on a pure 2D platforming action adventure approach.

Take control of ” Master” and rid the world of Tanza’s Minions that have been wreaking havoc and terrorizing mankind. Each level in the game is meticulously made, slightly similar to a pixel-art version of Dante’s Inferno.

To save your beloved Beatrice from the clutches of Satan, plunge deep into the nine circles of hell and search for her soul pleading for redemption. With an amazing presentation of hell along with its horrors and nightmares, Dante’s Inferno is arguably the best depiction of hell to date.

You can say Devil’s Hunt is the aborted kid of Capcom’s Devil May Cry because that’s how it feels when you try it out. Although not as good as the latter, the game deserves the mention for fitting into the category of  Games Set in Hell.

Players take control of a young named Desmond who finds himself embroiled in a war between Demons and Angels. Upon discovering his demonic powers, Desmond takes it upon his shoulders to stop this war that could cause harm to humankind.

Devil’s Hunt is an action beat’em up game with gameplay distinctively similar to Santa Monica’s God of War. Based on the Polish novel Equilibrium series, players take on hordes of hellish creatures in fast-paced gameplay while gazing at hell landscapes.

Silent Hill 3 is arguably the best depiction of the horrors of Silent Hill town, and it’s easy for one to compare it to hell. It’s the perfect game for metalheads. A wet dream became true. Full of exquisite metal soundtracks to bang your head to, it’s safe to say Slain: Back from Hell is one of the best depictions of hell. The game is tough, nudging you to learn your foes’ movement. It’s unbelievably gory, with each swing you perform, blood splashes all around.

Although not set specifically in hell, Shadow Man’s The Deadside setting is reminiscent of hell in various ways. Flesh-eating creatures lurking around, screams of the undead, and a bizarre yet fascinating atmosphere all make Shadow Man’s setting a hellish place for someone to live in.

Based on the comic series of the same name, Shadow Man is an action-adventure third-person shooting with major elements from the Metroidvania genre. It puts you in the shoes of  Mike LeRoi as he teleports back to Deadside to thwart the demon Legion’s plans from taking over sullen entities known as Dark Souls.

In Succubus, you’re not a helpless person looking for a way to survive, nor a muscular man loaded with a gun in his arms.  You’re a priestess of lust who uses her powers to take vengeance on her enemies.

The depiction of hell’s horrific landscapes along with the gory footage makes Succubus a worthy mention on the list. Although laden with adult-only content, this is what you would expect from being in control of Succubus herself.

Point-and-click titles have always been known for their penchant for telling courageous stories — a great example is the Monkey Island franchise and its delicate approach to great storytelling. However, Tomentum – Dark Sorrows comes with its own charm. The latter is a dark point-and-click adventure inspired by works of painters H.R. Giger and Zdzislaw Beksinski — And influential inspiration from other games such as Dark Seed and Demon’s Souls.
