If you’ve come looking to scare yourself with the best horror games of all time, then you’ve landed in the right spot on the internet. The horror genre has undergone quite an evolution since its inception. From humble beginnings with raw concepts since the Commodore 64 to incredibly realistic haunting ventures on the PlayStation 5, the genre has a wealth of classics under its belt.

Since its inception, the horror genre had the luxury to experiment with a myriad of concepts. This experimentation has helped the horror genre stand out as a unique and peerless medium. Horror video games like Eternal Darkness plunges players into an insane turmoil that will have them check their sanity at all times. Fatal Frame incorporated Japanese folklore into its games, plus the introduction of ghosts instead of vehement creatures has really made the series shine amongst its siblings in the medium.

When other genres pushed for realism, action and the absolute prowess to stomp anything that moves, the horror genre focused mainly on the atmosphere. A factor that made the genre shine, and it shows even today. Classics like Resident Evil remake on the Gamecube, Silent Hill 2 on the PS2, and System Shock have solidified their presence as some of the best horror games ever made.

Without going too much into detail, here is a list of the best horror games ever made, featuring both new and old titles that you may have overlooked. The goal is to help you discover games you might have missed and experience the best that the genre has to offer.

Silent Hill 2 continues to pride itself not only as one of the best psychological horror games ever made but also as an influential staple in the medium. Its influence not only gave birth to a bevy of indie horrors but also sank its teeth into other mediums like films.

The developers at Team Silent created pretty much an unprecedented masterpiece that many video games in the medium couldn’t come close to. A masterclass in storytelling, a claustrophobic setting with memorable characters alongside puzzles, and an unmatchless mood make Silent Hill 2 earn itself the prize of the best psychological horror ever created.

Resident Evil remake on the Gamecube is one of the strongest addition to the survival horror genre. Even years after its original release — and thanks to the recently released HD remaster— this Gamecube remake continues to impress horror fans even today.

The level of dread in the mansion accompanied by the sense of mystery made Resident Evil’s main setting perfect. Unlike Resident Evil 4 where players are always on the run from one location to another, Resident Evil uses one setting to its fullest potential, bringing the scare factor to a whole new level. Needless to say, without Resident Evil the survival horror genre wouldn’t have existed probably.

One moment players will be engaging special ops in an intense, adrenaline-fueled first-person shooting action.  And the next moment they’ll be pushed to experience a spine-tingling terror with supernatural encounters, where the line between reality and nightmare becomes blurred. Every horror fan who had to pleasure to play F.E.A.R remembers it still, and for those who haven’t yet. It’s never too late.

Silent Hill 3 is a strong follow-up that builds upon what made the first two games fantastic, and worth staying late at night for. When the name Silent Hill is mentioned, Silent Hill 3 tends to always be overlooked by the juggernaut Silent Hill 2 and the cancelled Silent Hills. And that’s a shame because the game has a lot of scares under its sleeves.

Silent Hill 3’s depiction of the town of Silent Hill is one of its charms. Unlike earlier games, which featured a deserted and foggy setting, the developers at Team Silent have stepped it up a notch in this third instalment. They’ve dug deeper into Silent Hill’s sinister side, creating truly horrifying monsters and a claustrophobic atmosphere that will keep gamers on edge throughout the game.

Fatal Frame 2 Crimson Butterfly doesn’t fail to deliver on the premise of making the player scared shitless. Everything about the game brims with the feeling of terror. From the menacing ghost encounters that roam the halls of each house, to the claustrophobic setting, and even the story.

What truly made Tecmo’s Fatal Frame II an appreciated masterpiece was its compelling narrative. The game’s story effectively brought players together, as they braved their way through a terrifying experience until the very end. The inclusion of multiple endings was a particularly clever choice, as it gave players a sense of agency and control over the outcome of the story, and also acted as an incentive to return for more.

BioShock may not be peddled as a horror game, but it certainly features the crux of being one. The first moments of the game are definitely scary, especially with the player being new to the city of Rapture, unaware of what’s awaiting them at every corner.  But as they progress, that scare factor begins to diminish eventually.

Directed by the underrated developer, Ken Levine, BioShock is one of his best works so far. For fans of anything first-person shooter and an itch for an experience filled with dread and uncertainty, definitely check out Bioshock or the entire trilogy. It’s worth every penny!

The remake comes packed with non-stop action, improved visuals, revamped controls and so much more that could cater to the new generation of players and also those who want to take a trip down the nostalgia lane. Pick up both, experience them both, and see for yourself which is the better version.

Condemned Criminal Origins demonstrated how skilled the team at Monolith Productions are at handling a psychological horror venture. Unlike their previous F.E.A.R game, Condemned Criminal Origins is a conventional detective horror with an emphasis on the fear of the unknown.

As Ethan Thomas — an FBI agent who has been wrongly accused of murder— you will roam the depths of the unknown, confronting psychopaths, and thugs and also witness some supernatural phenomenons that’ll send chills down your spine. Despite being released several years ago, Condemned is still considered one of the greatest horror games of all time, thanks to its gripping story, immersive gameplay, and creepy atmosphere.

Dead Space 2 is a solid follow-up that compliments its predecessor while also introducing several new improvements. It may have slightly shifted gears towards action horror, but it still manages to deliver unexpected scares that catch players off guard.

The second instalment follows protagonist Isaac Clarke as he faces both terrifying alien threats and his own inner demons, three years after the events of the first game. Players will once again confront deadly Necromorphs in this solid follow-up of the franchise, all while dealing with the psychological toll of their harrowing experiences. With its intense atmosphere and thrilling gameplay, Dead Space 2 is a worthy continuation of Isaac’s story.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent was released at a time when the indie scene was literally on fire. And while the golden age of indie games is long gone, players can always jump back and experience the best that era had to offer. Among some of these games worth looking back at is Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

The success of this game gave birth to a wave of imitators way before Silent Hill P.T. was even a thing. The Dark Descent — along with other names in the genre — played a pivotal role in revitalizing the genre by introducing fresh elements that had not been seen before. These mechanics set the stage for a new wave of horror games to follow in its wake. A decade later, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is still regarded as one of the greatest psychological horror games, and the best part? It’s still scary.

Devotion is Red Candle Games’ second venture into the horror genre. After their humble success with the beloved Detention, Devotion was one of the most anticipated horror games of the year 2019.  Within only a couple of days of its launch, the game was ultimately delisted from the digital storefront due to a controversy that led to the game’s demise. Today, Devotion is rarely mentioned, and the reason behind it is the former.

With the controversy aside, the Taiwan-based developer managed to deliver an excellent 3D horror game. Low on jumpscares, or anything that will make a grown-up jump from their seats, Devotion mainly focuses on the psychological factor. It succeeds at building a palpable sense of tension via its excellent storytelling, and the use of the constantly changing environment to its advantage to deliver pretty much what many would call a masterpiece. The prayers for any potential relisting of the game are slim, but thankfully, you can always grab the game from the official developer’s store.

The Evil Within and the sequel are Shinji Mikami’s return to the horror realm after a short hiatus that lasted for a couple of years. With no shortage of creativity under his belt, The Evil Within franchise is hailed as yet another excellent addition to the survival horror from the mind behind the iconic Resident Evil series.

The original game plunges players into a world of terror and uncertainty as they’re constantly thrown on edge, always on guard and ready for any deadly encounter with zombie-like creatures. As detective Sebastian Castellanos, the player must endure hellish experiences in order to uncover the mystery behind the events that ensnare him. The second game — while not necessarily scary— polishes nearly everything from the original to deliver an excellent sci-fi survival horror with a wealth of content to enjoy. Despite being somewhat overlooked when compared to other giants in the genre, The Evil Within franchise stands shoulder to shoulder with its brethren and is a superb example of the survival horror genre.

Silent Hill is often left in the dust when it comes to discussing the best Silent Hill games, and that’s a shame. Because without the original, subsequent instalments in the franchise wouldn’t exist.

Technically and visually, the original Silent Hill doesn’t hold a candle when pitted against its successors in the franchise. But the story is the game’s strongest asset, ultimately luring the player to overlook the game’s shortcomings and concentrate on its strengths. And with the rise of PS1-styled horror games, Silent Hill is enjoying renewed appreciation amongst veterans in the genre and also those yearning for a chilling dose of nostalgia.

Trying to pick which one of those two is the better way to experience Resident Evil 2 is a hard task. Similar to the situation with the Resident Evil 4 remake, I decided to put both so you can pick whichever you want. The original prides itself as one of the best survival horror games during the PlayStation era, and also one of the main contributors that revolutionized the survival horror genre, ultimately influencing a wave of competitors.

The remake — on the other hand — comes loaded with a terrifying experience, remade visuals, revamped controls and more. According to many, Resident Evil 2 is the best choice for new players. For veterans, the original mustn’t go overlooked as it deserves a chance as well.

Outlast — similar to Amnesia: The Dark Descent — was released during the golden age of the indie industry. A period that saw the emergence of an array of titles that brought their spin to the formula.

Outlast did away with the ability to defend oneself, instead focusing on stealth and fleeing from danger whenever encountered. Enemies roam the seemingly empty hall of the surroundings, always on the lookout for anyone they deem suspicious. Outlast has also made the experience even tenser by incorporating a night camera, which helps to see in the dark or zoom in during certain occasions. A mechanic that you’ll find useful throughout the entire game, but can you survive walking through the dark alone?

Haunting Ground is a fresh addition to the horror genre. The game isn’t about shooting zombies or confronting sinister ghosts. The game is about exploring an unnerving massive mansion, lauded with twisted individuals who are after one thing: to capture you.

Assume the role of a young girl named Fiona as she explores the surroundings, discovers truths about the mansion and hides from dangerous individuals who want to do her harm. Fiona won’t be alone in her predicament, as she will be accompanied by a shepherd dog who will prove useful during the utmost dire times. As they both progress throughout the nightmare, their relationship grows stronger, which plays a role in pushing the events of the game forward.

Unfortunately, Haunting Ground is nothing but an expensive prize to own these days. And that’s a shame. It is one of the best games on the PlayStation 2 that definitely deserve a remaster.

It’s also a perfect fit for Halloween, providing a hair-raising experience that keeps players at the edge of their seats as they crawl through vents to evade unspeakable horrors.

Tarsier Studios has skillfully crafted a game with disturbing visuals and a twisted plot that’s reminiscent of Studio Ghibli’s style, drawing inspiration from renowned titles such as Inside and Limbo. In this platformer horror game, players must overcome the odds and survive against some of the most spine-chilling creatures ever brought to life.

Silent Hill 4 was Team Silent’s attempt to experiment with unprecedented ideas that weren’t common back then. However, the game’s financial and creative limitations imposed by Konami at that time posed a significant challenge for the team.

Regardless, Team Silent — despite the challenges — managed to bring an incredible addition to the Silent Hill franchise, which often gets overlooked by the iconic Silent Hill 2. In this fourth instalment, players won’t venture back to the titular Silent Hill town. Instead, they’ll find themselves confined in an apartment that quickly turns into a haunting nightmare.

Some players may find Silent Hill 4 a bit rough around the edges, and the game’s focus on action over puzzles may not suit everyone’s taste. However, as part of a beloved series, it still manages to capture the essence of the franchise. Give it a shot.

Left 4 Dead is a first-person zombie shooter released during Valve’s heyday. After a decade and a half of its original release, Left 4 Dead is still widely recognized as one of the greatest online co-op zombie shooters of all time.

The game’s success went as far as the influence of the making of a plethora of titles, including Back 4 Blood, World War Z, and Evolve. However, these games couldn’t leave the lasting impact Left 4 Dead did. Even years after, this game can still be enjoyed by nearly anyone. Just make sure you stick with your friends, or they will leave you for dead.

The Darkness is a unique first-person shooter that draws inspiration from the comic book series of the same name by Top Cow Productions. Unlike other horror-themed games, in The Darkness, you take on the role of the boss – a monster with dark powers who can terrorize and eliminate enemies in badass ways.

Playing as Jackie Estacado, you can tap into supernatural abilities that allow you to rain down wrath upon your enemies, tearing them apart or even devouring their hearts. However, since Jackie’s powers are fueled by darkness, he is vulnerable to light. As a result, players must avoid light sources to maintain their demonic powers and avoid becoming weak and vulnerable like mere humans.

Shadows of the Damned is a humorous and intense third-person horror shooter that manages to strike a balance between humour and action while keeping itself on track. Born from a collaboration between the father of survival horror gaming, Shinji Mikami and Suda 51, this is the best these talented developers had to offer, yet.

The player assumes the role of Garcia Hotspur, a demon hunter on a mission to rescue his girlfriend, who has been taken by an army of darkness. To save her and defeat the Lord of the Demons, Garcia must venture deep into the underworld.

If you’re already familiar with Shinji Mikami games, or Goichi Suda’s finest works like Killer 7 and No More Heroes, then you already know Shadows of the Damned won’t be disappointing. It’s one of the best games made by Suda 51.

The Thing is an excellent example of how a game based on a movie should be. Just like X-Files: Resist or Serve and Constantine, the game remains loyal to the source material and successfully captures the film’s intended atmosphere. The game’s central theme revolves around teamwork and resource management.

To survive, players must collaborate with their team and establish trust. However, since trust is fragile, players can never be sure which of their crew members may be a threat. As a result, the game becomes intense when players face a series of decisions that can either earn their comrades’ trust or breed mistrust.

The Obscure duology is an excellent representation of how cooperative survival horror can be executed flawlessly. While other successful horror games, such as The Suffering, Silent Hill and Resident Evil focused solely on single-player only gameplay, Obscure took a different approach by incorporating co-op horror gameplay. And the results? Awesome.

Players can team up and progress through the game together, facing dangerous creatures and strategically dividing resources they discover throughout their journey. The cooperative gameplay is exceptionally well-designed, and both games are highly enjoyable, with the second instalment arguably being even better than the first. It’s unfortunate that there hasn’t been a recent co-op horror game on the same level as Obscure, as the genre could benefit from a new instalment or a spiritual successor.

Kuon is an exceptional addition to FromSoftware’s horror game catalogue, and even now, it continues to be discovered by new players. FromSoftware is famous for creating some of the most successful franchises in the gaming industry, including Dark Souls and Armored Core series. However, their journey into the horror genre has been a more modest one, starting with the Echo Night series and culminating in Kuon, another atmospheric horror game created by Atsushi Taniguchi.

Kuon’s greatest strength is its ability to use chilling ambient soundscapes to create an eerie and captivating atmosphere, resulting in an immersive experience for players. If you’re into atmospheric horror video games, Kuon is for you.

Echo Night is a horror game that stands out from the rest due to its unique and simplistic approach. While other developers were aiming for more ambitious horror games, FromSoftware went in a different direction with this title. The game’s controls can be frustrating and are often criticized, but if you can overlook this flaw, Echo Night provides an incredible experience.

In the game, players travel back in time and communicate with lost spirits, collecting astral pieces they leave behind. However, this is not an easy task as players are haunted by vengeful ghosts that cannot be fought, only dispelled with the use of light. Players who are into such games that focus strongly on the story should check out the Echo Night series.

Before Capcom’s Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark was already paving the way for the survival horror genre. Sadly, the franchise has remained dormant for quite some time, waiting for a strong comeback. However, even years after, Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare still holds up as a worthwhile experience for those who appreciate survival horror games.

Follow the harrowing journey of Edward Carnby and Aline Cedric as they investigate Shadow Island, a mysterious place off the coast of Massachusetts. Players must choose one character to play as, but regardless of which character has been picked, the ending remains mostly the same. Together, they must uncover secrets, confront abnormal creatures, and survive.

The game features tank controls, and players must backtrack to unlock doors and progress through the game. Ammunition is scarce, so avoiding unnecessary confrontations is the best strategy. Be strategic, and success can be achieved.

Doom 3, originally released on the Xbox, was a game ahead of its time that left many players stunned. While it might not have been a fan favourite among those who grew up with the classic Doom games, it was a technical masterpiece and a clever entry into the survival horror genre.

In contrast to the fast-paced gameplay of its predecessors, Doom 3 places a strong emphasis on carefulness and resource management. Ammunition is a precious commodity, and enemies are relentless and unforgiving. The game’s eerie atmosphere and diverse arsenal of weapons add to the intense and chilling experience that Doom 3 offers.

Fatal Frame 3 is often overlooked when it comes to discussing the best horror games of all time. When pitted against its predecessor, this third instalment rarely gets enough attention. And that’s a shame because it’s as incredibly intense and spine-tingling as its predecessors, and it could have served as a perfect conclusion to the trilogy.

What makes this third instalment distinct from its predecessors is its strong focus on the psychological themes of guilt, depression, identity crisis and heartbreak. While Fatal Frame the Tormented retains the crux of the series, the incorporation of these themes makes the story genuinely captivating from start to finish. Plus, the usual inclusion of multiple endings will make any fan return for more.

D2 is an entirely different specimen of the genre. Attempting to classify it under one genre is a hard task as the game is a brilliant mould of several concepts mashed together. The game seamlessly transitions from being a first-person interactive action adventure to an intense survival horror experience on the Dreamcast. However, what truly sets D2 apart from other games is the inclusion of an RPG system, which adds an unexpected layer to the gameplay.

D2, directed by the late Kenji Eno, renowned for his work on Enemy Zero, was a game that was ahead of its time upon its initial release. While 3D graphics were still a relatively new frontier for game developers to explore, the team at WARP managed to create a masterpiece that fully utilized the technical capabilities of the Dreamcast console. The result was a compelling survival horror experience with an engaging storyline that appeared to draw inspiration from the classic sci-fi horror film, The Thing.

If you’re interested in exploring old survival horror games, D2, Deep Fear, Enemy Zero and the original Alone in the Dark trilogy are your best bet.

From sudden jump scares to the terror of being chased by a psycho with a pair of scissors, ready to snip-snip you like a leaf, this game will keep you on the edge of your seat. Call of Cthulhu is a stealth survival horror game that draws inspiration from H. P. Lovecraft’s works, including The Shadow Over Innsmouth and the Cthulhu Mythos. The game follows the story of detective Jack Walters, who travels to the mysterious town of Innsmouth to investigate strange occurrences. However, his investigation leads him to witness things he shouldn’t have.

Although plagued with game-breaking bugs and glitches, Dark Corners of the Earth is a linear survival horror game that embodies the genre’s core elements. Players start as helpless detectives with no means of defence, forcing them to rely on stealth to avoid enemies. The AI in the game can be difficult to deal with, so avoiding enemies altogether is often the best course of action. Despite its flaws, fans of the genre should give Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth a chance due to its gripping atmosphere and storyline.

Red Candle Games’ foray into the horror genre with Detention was met with surprise and acclaim. Set in the historical period of Taiwan’s White Terror, the game follows two students trapped in their high school, besieged by otherworldly creatures called Lingered at every turn.

The game’s gameplay mechanics are reminiscent of other psychological horror titles like Moonlight Syndrome by Goichi Suda, featuring a unique approach to fear. Rather than relying on hiding or evasion tactics, players must confront the monsters head-on, heightening the terror of the experience. Despite its deceptively simplistic appearance, Detention delivers genuine scares that will keep players on edge from start to finish.

Dark Seed is one of the scariest psychological horror games of all time, right there with other classics like System Shock 2, Silent Hill and Eterlan Darkness Sanity’s Requiem. What makes it scary is the unsettling atmosphere accompanied by the terrifying storyline that works hand-in-hand to execute one thing: make the player feel genuinely afraid.

Dark Seed shines with several frightening aspects like the use of surreal and grotesque imagery. Everything about the game feels frightening, from the nightmarish environments and creatures to the game’s eerie soundtrack and sound effects. The combination of these elements creates a truly frightening experience that has made Dark Seed a classic in the horror genre.
