Detention marks the Taiwan-based Red Candle Games’ debut in the horror genre. And to everyone’s surprise, the developers did pretty well. Set in 1960, during the period known as the White Terror, the game’s plot puts you in the shoes of two young students who are trapped in high school. Surrounded by creatures known as the Lingered at every corner, their only choice is to confront and survive.
Its gameplay is pretty reminiscent of the likes of Moonlight Syndrome, a psychological horror game by Goichi Suda released exclusively in Japan. Both of these games are scary for their way of handling fear. Players aren’t supposed to run and hide from monsters but rather confront them. An approach that plays a pivotal role in enhancing the experience even further. Do not be deceived by the looks of this game, it’s scary.

Inside may spark some debate since it’s not peddled as a horror game nor is it as scary as the likes of Little Nightmares. However, one has to acknowledge the level of dread in each corner of the game.
Inside and its sibling Limbo are regarded as influential figures in the indie horror scene. This is pretty evident in games such as The Little Nightmares. These games aren’t scary at their core, but rather focus on delivering an unmatchless level of dread that evokes every iota of fear inside of us. Being constantly followed by something, or on the brink of falling from a cliff only to wind up to the bottom to be devoured by something, is indeed scary.

Alisa is a unique throwback to the golden age of survival horrors that touches all the buttons of nostalgia. It’s a pretty obscure title that many aren’t aware of its existence as of yet. But now that you’re here, you’re one of the few who are aware of it. You take control of a young girl named Alisa as she chases one wanted criminal only to end up being stuck in an old Victorian mansion, haunted by doll-like humanoids.

Visage is a tense psychological horror that plays in the vein of the cancelled Silent Hill P.T. When the latter was cancelled by Konami, multiple attempts by various developers were made to indirectly continue what Hideo Kojima achieved in a short period of time. Alas, every attempt has been met with a series of cancellations until Visage appeared.
Set in an enormous empty house, players will wander through the claustrophobic environment, exploring gloomy corridors, and interacting with the surroundings as they roam cluelessly unaware of what’s awaiting them around each corner. The game makes use of its uncanny atmosphere and terrifying narrative to enhance the experience and create tension that’ll evoke every inch of fear inside the player.

Surprisingly, this is a polished game, and it does stand the test of time. It may be a short first-person horror game, but you will surely enjoy it. Players will roam through the dimly lit corridors all while surviving encounters against the scary members of the family.
