Trying to understand why Mortal Kombat 12 has been named Mortal Kombat 1 will get us nowhere, so we will just have to accept it. It's even harder to accept the character changes though, both aesthetically and functionally.
On one hand, "kameo fighters" have been introduced, which basically lets you choose a tag partner, that you can execute a few combo moves with, but not play standalone as. Dozens of fighting games have implemented a tag system with 2 or even 3 characters, but it's the first time we see a fighting game using unplayable characters for this role!
That's right, Kano, Jax, Sonya, Goro and many more iconic characters, will only be usable for tag attacks, and not as fully playable characters! Such a shame... Is there still hope that Netherrealm will eventually add them in? Or should we keep on enjoying MKX & MK11 while hoping the next entry will deliver what the fans want?
On the other hand, the overall character aesthetics went from dark to colorful, and we're already seeing some questionable re-designs like a young Raiden, or a human Reptile (at least he started as human), supposedly based on the "Mortal Kombat 1 Reboot" narrative - otherwise known as a cheap excuse to disregard any continuity in the MK universe.
Did I also mention there's not a single new MK character announced so far?
