The roster of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite has disappointed a lot of MvC fans, since the character list is quite smaller than what we expected, there are a lot of favorites missing, and they’ve been replaced by a few.. questionable characters!
A lot of players have criticized Marvel for promoting their future movie stars, instead of the characters that made the MvC franchise stand out in the arcades era, but can we really blame them? The game was released in 2017, yet the roster will surely feel fresh even a decade from now!
You can tag between two characters while fighting, instead of the traditional 3-character squads from UMvC3 & MvC2, and along with the downsized roster, Capcom tried to make the game more accessible, and less of a “hassle”. I think they did succeed, and MvCI’s gameplay is actually one of the best out there – if you take your fighting games seriously.
But the roster, and the way it was marketed to players, sadly hurt the game’s potential irreparably. The 30$ DLC Character pass that contains just 6 characters (Black Panther, Black Widow, Monster Hunter, Sigma, Venom, and Winter Soldier), or the big number of DLC costumes, didn’t really help with the game’s reputation, so we do hope Capcom will positively surprise us when the next MvC entry arrives on our doorsteps!
