Hunter is a Pay-to-Play skill that requires having a membership to use it, thus the only way to train it is by using P2P methods. It is used to catch various creatures all over the map such as animals, birds, etc. It is a non-combat skill which means it isn’t used in combat, but using it can still cause you to take damage and reduce your Hitpoints.
Players mainly train this skill to unlock new quests as well as certain activities in the game. Using Hunter can also be useful as you can be rewarded with some good items such as Spotted Kebbit Fur which is obtained by hunting Spotted Kebbits to make Spotted capes.
Hunter can also be used to make some money by catching Chinchompas to sell them at the Grand Exchange to the other players. You can also use the Chinchompas as ammunition for Chining to train your Ranged skill.
In this article, we will be focusing on the various and most efficient training methods to get your Hunter skill to level 99 as fast as possible. A way to make money will also be mentioned later on. Note that this skill isn’t really expensive to train as it doesn’t require many items to use. Most of the methods below are not AFK.
Make sure to check out all 23 OSRS skills in our relevant guide.
Hunting creatures can be done by using the Hunter skill and it has various ways to be done, each requires some requirements to be used. This can only be done in some areas in the game which are called the Hunter Areas and they can be found around the map marked with its Hunter icon.

Aerial Fishing is a good way to train Hunter and Fishing at the same time, but it is generally used to train Fishing and it requires level 35 Hunter and level 43 Fishing to be used. You can read everything about it in our 99 Fishing guide.
It is a good way to AFK train Hunter but it maybe not as fast as the other training methods. It consists of using Bird Houses to catch birds on Fossil Island. This can be done by using Bird Houses on their designated spots on Fossil Island while filling them with Hop/Herb seeds (10 seeds each). Players should wait until the Bird House gets filled with birds before checking it to gain Hunter XP.
Filling a Bird House with birds may take up to 50 minutes, so using this method is usually good for being AFK. Players will receive Hunter XP, raw bird meat, bird nests, and feathers once they check the Bird House to empty it.
Note that the chance to receive a Bird nest is depending on your Hunter level and the Bird House type (higher is better).
You can craft your own Bird Houses instead of buying them from other players. Each Bird House requires a Hammer, Chisel, Clockwork, and Logs along with a specific Crafting level depending on the kind of the Bird House.
Each Bird House also requires a certain Hunter level to use and XP gained by using each of them varies depending on its type. Note that the house will be destroyed (the Clockwork won’t be lost) upon checking it so it can only be used for 1 time.
Bird House Type | Hunter Level | XP |
---|---|---|
Regular | 5 | 280 |
Oak | 14 | 420 |
Willow | 24 | 560 |
Teak | 34 | 700 |
Maple | 44 | 820 |
Mahogany | 49 | 960 |
Yew | 59 | 1,020 |
Magic | 74 | 1,140 |
Redwood | 89 | 1,200 |
Hammer and Chisel can be obtained from some General stores such as Varrock General Store in Varrock. While the seeds are obtained by killing monsters such as Ice troll females.
The Clockwork can be made in the player-owned house, but it is advised to directly buy it from the Grand Exchange since it is much faster this way.
There two ways to increase the Hunting catch rate aside from having a High Hunter level. These two ways are using either bait or a smoking trap. Both of these ways will increase the chance by a very small chance while requiring extra steps to add them to the trap. That means they both are not worth to use at all if you want to train efficiently.
A trap that is used to catch birds in their own Hunter Area. Players should set up the trap in the creature’s area and wait until it gets caught. All of the Hunter techniques below were explained earlier in the OSRS Hunter 101 section, so please refer to that section for more information about it.
Any Hunting Tool mentioned below can be bought from the Hunter Shops which were previously mentioned above.
Items Needed: Bird Snare
To catch Crimson swifts, you will need to set up a Bird Snare trap in the specific Hunter Area to catch them which is located southeast of the Feldip Hills area.
You should keep doing that repeatedly with one trap since you are below level 20. It is also recommended to drop all the loot you get (except for the Feathers) to train more efficiently.
Items Needed: Bird Snare
Catching Copper Longtails requires a Bird Snare trap and this can be done in some specific Hunter Areas, one of them is located in Kourend Woodland. You will be able to use only one trap until you reach level 20.
You should drop all the loot you get except for the Feathers since they are stackable.
Items Needed: Bird Snare
You will only be able to catch Tropical Wagtails by using a Bird Snare Trap which is done in the western side of the Hunter Area in Feldip Hills. You will be able to use two traps since you are now above level 20 which means the XP rates will be kinda boosted.
Items Needed: Ropes and Small Fishing Nets
Other Requirements: Completion of Priest in Peril Quest.
To catch Swamp Lizards, you will have to set up a Net trap in the specific Hunter Area for these Lizards which is located southeast of Canifis. Accessing to Canifis requires the completion of Priest in Peril Quest.
Setting up a Net trap requires having a Rope and Small Fishing Net in your inventory for each trap. Before reaching level 40, you will be able to only set up 2 traps at a time, but 3 Traps will be used above level 40.
It is highly recommended to drop the Lizards caught instead of banking them to train more efficiently.
Items Needed: Ropes and Small Fishing Nets
Recommended items: Waterskins
Catching Orange Salamanders is done in the desert just southeast of Shantay Pass. To survive the desert heat, you will need to have waterskins in your inventory.
A Net trap is the only way to catch Orange Salamanders which requires a Rope and Small Fishing Net in your inventory. You will be able to set up only 3 traps at a time to catch the Salamanders. It is also recommended to drop the Salamanders for better XP rates instead of depositing them in a bank.
Items Needed: Ropes and Small Fishing Nets
Just like Orange Salamanders, you will need to have a Rope and a Small Fishing Net in your inventory in order to set up a Net trap for the Red Salamanders. This can be done in the Hunter Area located just south of Ourania Altar.
Four trap can be used during this process and the Salamanders should be released when you get a full inventory for more efficient training.
Items Needed: Box Traps
In order to catch Red Chinchompas, you will need to have set up Box Traps in their Hunter Area which is found in Feldip Hills Hunter Area. Additionally, you can unlock another Hunter Area located in the dungeon just near the Feldip Hills Hunter Area but it requires you to complete the Hard Western Provinces Diaries.
There is also a new Hunter Area for Red Chinchompas which is located just north of Prifddinas which requires the completion of Song of the Elves Quest.
A total of four traps can be used at this level resulting in more efficient training.
Note that you shouldn’t drop the Chinchompas since they are stackable and a very good source of money if you sell them at the Grand Exchange.
This method is actually used to make money through the Hunter skill.
All the methods mentioned below will be a mix of Alternative methods and money-making methods if you are bored of the previously mentioned methods.
Items Needed: Box Traps & a Quick Teleport
XP/Hour: 140K
Required Level: 73+
Recommended Level: 80+
This is a very good method to make money while training but the downside of it is being located right in the Wilderness. That means dying there will result in losing all of your Black Chinchompas, so it is advised to have a quick teleport method like any teleport tablet to use when you are attacked by others.
The Hunter Area for these creatures is located south-east of the Lava Maze in the Wilderness. They can only be caught by using Box Traps. You will be able to use 5 traps during this method, which is the maximum allowed traps you can use at this point, but since you are in the Wilderness, an extra trap may be used.
It is recommended to bring no gear and nothing at all aside from the Box Traps and the quick teleport method.
Items Needed: Ropes, Small Fishing Nets & a Quick Teleport
XP/Hour: 90K~150K
Required Level: 70+
This method is won’t grant you any money since you will be dropping all the Salamanders you catch for a good XP ratio. Black Salamanders are found in the Wilderness in the Boneyard Hunter area. You can bring a Quick teleport with you in case somebody attacks you, but you really shouldn’t care since you won’t have anything to lose aside from the Ropes and fishing nets.
These Salamanders need a Net Trap to be caught, just like any other Salamanders.
You can use the Aerial Fishing method to train Both Hunter and Fishing at the same time, but it is recommended to only focus on Hunter training and do both separately.
Everything about Aerial Fishing is explained in the Fishing guide, so please check it out for more information.
