Pokémon Scarlet & Violet introduce the 9th generation of Pokémon, keeping the tradition of the 3 starter Pokémon the same – letting the player choose a Grass (Sprigatito), Fire (Fuecoco), or Water (Quaxly) starter as their first companion, while only making it possible to acquire all 3 through trading with other players.

Scarlet & Violet take place in the region of Paldea, enabling Pokémon to Terastallize – assimilating a powerful form that enhances the power of each attack, that can only be used once before it has to be recharged at a Pokémon Centre.

We’ll break down below all the starter Pokémon in Scarlet & Violet, making it easier to decide what’s the best choice for you, as well as showcasing the min / max stats each starter can reach for each stat, based on its IVs & EVs.

What is the Best Starter in Pokémon Scarlet / Violet?

Similar to most Pokémon games, picking the Fire starter, Fuecoco, will make your life way easier in the early game.

Even though Scarlet & Violet is the first mainline Pokémon game that offers an open-world with multiple paths you can follow, most of the Trainers & wild Pokémon you will encounter at the starting areas will have a Grass / Bug / Flying type, making it the hardest for the Grass starter, Sprigatito.

Quaxly is not as weak, since it can learn a Flying move fairly quickly, offering many Super Effective procs against early enemies (but also receiving a lot of them).

All the final evolutions of Scarlet / Violet starters have a balanced spread of their stats, but each one has different strengths and weaknesses:

  • Meowscarada is the fastest, and can hit very hard with Physical Attacks.
  • Skeledirge is the only one with strong Special Attacks, while maintaining high Defense & HP.
  • Quaquaval hits the hardest with Physical Attacks, while having the most balance among its other stats.

How to Get All 3 Starters in Pokémon Scarlet / Violet?

Pokémon Bank won’t be available for Scarlet & Violet for a while, therefore getting all 3 starters to your game won’t be the easiest process:

  • You can use the Surprise Trade feature, found inside the Poké Portal menu, and just hope that you will get an unevolved Starter.
  • Otherwise you will need at least 2 Nintendo Switch systems, and 2 copies of Scarlet and / or Violet, in order to trade through the Link Trade feature, found again inside the Poké Portal menu.

The good news, is that you can use any copy of Scarlet / Violet in order to get & trade any starter, without losing your save game.

Since all Pokémon games can only save their data on a user’s account inside a Nintendo Switch, and not with Cloud Saves, you can easily create a Guest account (or use any other account that’s not your main account), and start a new playthrough of Scarlet / Violet in there.

After you reach the first Pokémon Center in the game, you will unlock the ability to use Link & Surprise Trades.

So after you have successfully transferred the 2nd starter you are missing, you can easily start a new playthrough by visiting the System Settings page on your Nintendo Switch, and navigating to Data Management > Delete Save Data > Pokémon Scarlet / Violet > Delete Save Data for [User Name].
