SSBU boasts an impressive 71 playable fighters, excluding DLC fighters (which brings the total to 82). But when you load up Smash Bros. Ultimate for the first time ever, you’ll likely be scratching your head at the fact that you don’t have anyone unlocked besides the starting 8 characters.
This is done so you have to play the game to slowly unlock characters in the game, while you are getting to know the ropes.
But how do you unlock these characters, and how can you do it QUICKLY?
The easiest and fastest way to unlock fighters in SSBU is by playing VS. matches. You will likely face a new opponent after playing a VS. match, but there is about a 6-10 minute cooldown before you can fight another challenger, and unlock a new fighter.
The most optimal way to unlock characters is to play a VS. match, where you don’t have to win – just actually play the match, as the game detects if you are not using button inputs.
After facing an opponent and winning the fight, restart the game and go again. This eliminates the cooldown and is by far the fastest method to unlock all fighters.
Classic Mode is a single-player or a 2 player mode, where each fighter has a specific series of opponents and challenges. This method is slower, but you have the advantage of experiencing more of the game, and it may be more fun!
To speed up the process a bit, we recommend that you choose the lowest intensity. After completing a classic mode path you will encounter a challenger. There are no cooldowns so you can knock yourself out, without having to restart the game every time!
World of Light is the campaign/adventure mode in Smash Ultimate. You team up with “spirits” and explore the vast world, while fighting enemies and challengers along the way, to get more powerful and defeat the ultimate enemy, Galeem.
Playing through World of Light is by far the hardest and longest method of unlocking fighters, being around 20-30 hours long per playthrough. The upside is that it is a way more involved experience, you will unlock a lot of spirits along the way and it may be a lot of fun, as the campaign is crafted with a ton of love by the devs!

How do you get on classic mode hardest intensity
The intensity score depends on your overall performance, you need to beat each opponent as fast as possible, making sure to not whiff your hits ideally. Deaths bring down the score a lot, so if you’re going for 9.9 it’s better to restart if you die!
