Many tend to think that only console gaming reigns supreme when it comes to great hack-and-slash games, but that’s completely not true. PC Gaming provides a slew of hack-and-slash titles, and if we count emulation, then the games are endless.
During its inception, the genre started as a sub-genre of beat’em ups, but it quickly evolved to absorb other genres like third-person shooters, Role-playing, and even first-person shooting to give players what they’ve dreamed of.
This list focuses more on tackling naturally fast-paced hack-and-slash outings. Those who are into character action games will feel delighted at the number of games that will be mentioned here. They’re memorable and worth hours of replayability. Enjoy.
Note: A couple of Musou titles will also receive a mention.

The Devil May Cry franchise is in a league of its own when it comes to the hack-and-slash gameplay style. Originally debuted on the PS2 back in 2001, the franchise went on to spawn several successful sequels which kept evolving with each new release.
Devil May Cry 5 was the most recent release in the franchise after more than a decade of hiatus. The 5th entry combines everything from its predecessors to deliver a new exciting and stylish chapter of the sons of Sparda. Featuring incredible visuals thanks to the RE engine, well-done voice-acting and stylish combos that make the gameplay exceptional, Devil May Cry 5 is a wild ride.
You can still delve back into the originals, but they can be rough around the edges at times (especially the 2nd one). Luckily, the 3rd entry and its sequel still hold up well these days, which is nice because Devil May Cry 3 has the best story in the series.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance came out as a surprise when it launched. For years, the series has been known for its stealth gameplay. However, Revengeance took a completely different approach by introducing Raiden as the new main protagonist with distinctive over-the-top action gameplay.
And while long-time series fans weren’t pleased with this spin-off, the fact is this entry made the series much more accessible than its predecessors. The best thing about Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is the ability to slice anything that moves in slow-motion. Nothing comes down to the satisfaction of cutting a mecha robot to pieces while watching it crumble in front of your eyes.
After all these years, this game remains one of the best hack-and-slash games ever made. If you haven’t played it yet it’s not late to experience it on your PC.

No More Heroes is a cult classic that every hack-and-slash fan should experience. Its combat is addictive due to its simplicity and the way it blends two genres together. (Hack & Slash and Beat’em up). One hour you’ll be cutting off heads left and right, and in the second hour, you’ll be body-slamming their heads to the ground using wacky wrestling moves.
As the otaku Travis Touchdown, you’ll go on a quest to become the number one assassin, and maybe have a chance to do it with Sylvia if she feels like it. The story isn’t that mind-blowing, but that’s Suda51 for you.
The second game improves over its predecessor by introducing the ability to wield dual-beam katanas towards the end. What’s more, the sequel features some of the best boss fights in the genre that’ll stick with you forever. Although the camera movement in the second game may annoy many, the game is still entertaining if you can manage to forgive these flaws. For those who yearn for a great and memorable hack-and-slash experience, No More Heroes is the best choice.

Bayonetta doesn’t feel like a Devil May Cry clone at all. In fact, Bayonetta is in a league of its own. A unique experience that you won’t find elsewhere, and it’s a shame that the sequel will never come to PC since Nintendo owns the rights.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the same developer behind Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance made Bayonetta. PlatinumGames delivers an exceptional journey that you will sadly not find elsewhere. The game is crazy, featuring a unique combat system with satisfying quick-time events, and incredible soundtracks to listen to.
As the witch Bayonetta, you fight hordes of grotesque angels using her guns equipped in her heels, sidearms and most importantly her hair. Bayonetta’s hair is capable of summoning anything that comes to her mind, from a giant beast that devours her foes to deadly weapons.

Onimusha: Warlords, during its initial development phase, started as a “Resident Evil but with a samurai” concept, and ended up being its own thing. The result? fascinating.
Instead of following in Resident Evil’s footsteps, Onimusha: Warlords features a brave samurai (Samanosuke Akechi) whose tasked with rescuing princess Yuki from the clutches of the Genma.
Gameplay-wise, Onimusha: Warlords may feel rough around the edges if you aren’t accustomed to the classic tank controls. But if you can manage to ignore that, you’re in for an entertaining game. The combat is solid despite all these years, and it shows that Capcom has spent time crafting this masterpiece. Samanosuke can wield up to 3 mythical weapons, all of which possess destructive powers capable of taking on dangerous Genmas.
We can only hope that the other sequels will likely receive a remaster treatment on PC in the foreseeable future.

God of War is a reboot of the original saga with a new epic adventure, and more of Kratos bashing enemies to their death.
The reboot completely revamped the gameplay, dropping away from the usual gameplay style seen in previous titles, and opting for a somewhat open-world style. However, God of War shines brightly in its storytelling and incredible soundtrack design.
We can only hope that the success of the reboot may push Sony to deliver the originals to PC and why not Ragnarok as well? One can only dream.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is an over-the-top action hack-and-slash set in the Star Wars universe. The story follows Starkiller working under the notoriously menacing Darth Vader who in the end ends up betraying him. The sequel, on the one hand, is a tale of revenge as it picks up six months after the events of the prequel.
The Force Unleashed is a solid hack-and-slash experience revolving around the use of your Force powers, including push and lightning, and slicing down Stormtroopers left and right. The fun is all about cutting, cutting and most importantly cutting anything that moves. We can only hope that the game may receive a third sequel in the foreseeable future.
The Star Wars franchise is popular for its rich line of video game adaptations. Ranging from RPGs, and First Person Shooters to Lego titles, the franchise knows how to please different genres’ aficionados.

NieR: Automata is a great hack-and-slash title that you shouldn’t miss out on. If you’ve enjoyed Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, this one will find its way to stick with you until you finish it.
PlatinumGames know how to make great games, but it seems that the company possesses the secret ingredient for making memorable and fun-to-play hack-and-slash titles. Nier: Automata fixes some of its predecessors’ missteps to create a refined gameplay experience by blending different genres altogether, and the results are incredible.
Many tend to compare Automata to the likes of Bayonetta, but both are different to each other. The seamless shifting from fast-paced action hack-and-slash and an engaging shoot-em-up to side-scrolling adds a layer of variety to the game. A mixture of ideas makes NieR: Automata stand out from other juggernauts in the genre.

The Darksiders franchise is an incredible hack-and-slash experience coated with platforming sequences and interesting puzzles to solve. And while it suffered from several flaws like any other franchise in the genre, the 2nd game improved over its predecessor in so many aspects, most notably the expanded open-world environment and the sheer amount of weapons Death can carry.
That is not to say the first game is bad, no. The original game is also a solid hack-and-slash hit featuring one of the best badass protagonists in video games. The 3rd game on the other hand puts you in the shoes of another badass horseman named Fury. With her deadly whip, she’s capable of taking on an array of enemies and teaching them a lesson about messing with her. My only gripe with the third game is the lack of horse riding although it’s understandable that the latter acts as a mere narrative point in the story.
Call it a Legend of Zelda or a God of War clone, but the truth is, the franchise isn’t a clone of these two. To me, Darksiders 2 was the series’ peak. The series is recommended to every hack and slash fan. You can also try Darksiders Genesis despite the top-down gameplay style, it’s definitely a fantastic experience.

Ninja Gaiden Master Collection is in a league of its own when it comes to how fast-paced action hack and slash is handled. The game isn’t similar to any title I have mentioned before. Simply put, Ninja Gaiden is unique. As the legendary dragon ninja Ryu Hayabusa, you are tasked with liberating the world from the clutches of the demons that roam the world. It’s also your duty to slice anyone who’s conspiring with the demon to wreak havoc on earth.
I previously played the original Ninja Gaiden 2 on the Xbox 360 back in 2011 but went back to give the Master Collection a shot, and boy, the game still kicks ass. I felt a bit disappointed that Koei Tecmo could have revived the original release with the additional content on Sigma, keeping the blood effects and the charming graphics. At the end of the day, it’s a good thing that those who missed the Ninja Gaiden reboot trilogy can now experience the franchise thanks to the Master Collection.
Ryu has several deadly weapons under his belt, ranging from a katana, double-katana, and staff to a freaking gigantic scythe capable of cutting through steel. All of these weapons can be switched on the fly which adds a layer of variety to the game without breaking its pace. If you haven’t gotten the chance to try Ninja Gaiden before, this is your chance. Give it a shot.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a reboot of the critically acclaimed Castlevania franchise. Despite how many die-hard fans of the series were upset with the direction the reboot took, one has to admire the ideas Mercury Steam incorporated into the game. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a complete overhaul of the traditional Castlevania series with an emphasis on nature, action and cinema-like storytelling.
Taking influence from Symphony of the Night, and Lament of Innocence, Lords of Shadow delivers what is considered an icon in the hack-and-slash genre. You play as Gabriel Belmont who is on a quest to eliminate a cult known as the Lords of Shadow. In the process of accomplishing his task, he will seek a way to resurrect his wife. The game is played through the third-person perspective and has you infiltrating gorgeous 3D environments full of puzzles and monsters to whip.
Lords of Shadow 2 has you playing as Dracula himself as he seeks to take out Satan. The first game and the sequel are pretty identical except that in the 2nd game, you’re much more powerful. Despite how many years have passed, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow doesn’t feel dated at all.

Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time came out as a surprise to many when it was first announced. Many, including me, speculated that the game will turn out to be another cash-grab title that time will forget, but that was wrong.
Battle Through Time adapts the final moments of the official TV series and have you playing Samurai Jack who’s been sent to the future by Aku, the dark master. So what should Samurai Jack do? gotta get back to the past. The gameplay is surprisingly solid and offers a variety of combos, weapons and even guns which Jack finds throughout the course of the game.
If you’re a fan of Samurai Jack, you’re in for a memorable treat. One thing you don’t know is that Tomonobu Itagaki, the guy behind the Ninja Gaiden reboot was involved in the making of this game. Perhaps this will give you the incentive to try it out.

Madness Returns is easily one of the most underrated video games of the seventh generation. The game sure suffers from some bugs, but players will certainly enjoy Alice’s adventure if they can manage to overlook these issues.
The game is a tale of finding one’s identity and thwarting the fears residing deep inside the memory. You take control of Alice Liddell, a girl suffering from trauma caused by the death of her family in a fire. The game puts a striking emphasis on nature and breathtaking visuals. The game is played from the third-person perspective featuring platforming levels soaked with an engaging combat system. Sure the hacking and slashing in Alice: Madness Returns doesn’t reach the heights of juggernauts such as Devil May Cry, but Alice is still a solid game.
Alice has several weapons under her clothes such as a knife, a hammer and…a teapot. Yes, you read it, a teapot. This particular isn’t used to pour tea, but to blast enemies with a devastating hot ball made out of tea.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance is the latest entry in the franchise. Compared to its predecessors, Defiance is a huge improvement. Instead of taking control of only one character, the game introduces two playable characters: Raziel and Kain. Players will dive deep into a convoluted story of corruption and balance, betrayal and trust. The series is renowned for its high-quality voice acting and story-telling that puts so many ” interactive story games “ to shame.
At first, players take on the role of the vampire Kain who possesses special powers and destructive combat skills. Playing as Raziel grants you the ability to suck your enemies’ blood, lift them in the air using your Telekinesis powers, and shove your blade into their stomachs while having an evil smirk on your face.
The game quickly shifts to Raziel, a former vampire who’s been betrayed by his master Kain. Blinded by feelings of vengeance and torment, he seeks Kain to finish him once and for all. Raziel is different from Kain as Raziel can absorb the souls of his slain enemies, climb on walls, and even travels between the land of the dead and the living.
Despite all these years, Legacy of Kain: Defiance is a solid hack-and-slash title, and it is tragic that the franchise may never witness a revival anytime soon.

Ryse: Son of Rome plunges players into ancient Rome and follows the story of Marius Titus, a Roman general who seeks vengeance for the murder of his family. Ryse was one of Crytek’s astonishing launch titles on the Xbox One. Its visuals, facial expression and the sound-design felt truly next-gen. Even today, the game looks amazing.
The gameplay is heavily focused on quick-time events and melee combat, and while it can get repetitive at times, it is still an enjoyable experience. All in all, Ryse: Son of Rome is a decent game that is worth playing for its story and visuals, but it may not be for everyone due to its limited gameplay mechanics.

Shadow of Mordor: Middle Earth is one of the best adaptations of the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Taking place in between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, players follow the story of Talion, a ranger who seeks vengeance against the forces of Sauron after his family is murdered.
When Shadow of Mordor: Middle Earth feels like yet another open-world action game, it introduces a groundbreaking mechanic: The Nemesis System. It procedurally generates enemies with their own unique personalities and grudges which creates a dynamic and ever-changing world for you to explore. The combat is the game’s selling point; it’s fast-paced and fluid with the ability to perform some devastating executions on your enemies. Additionally, the game also features stealth elements, allowing players to approach battles in a variety of ways.

Legend of Kay puts players in the role of the fearless feline warrior, Kay, who becomes fed up with the oppression and injustices inflicted upon the innocent. He sets out on a mission to defeat the tyrannical rats and gorillas who have been abusing their power for evil. As Kay travels through the world, he encounters a diverse cast of creatures including pandas, cats, frogs, wolves, and more.
This charming 3D platformer will captivate players with its intriguing story and cute graphics. Plus, it has a solid hack-and-slash system with up to three weapons to choose from; claws, a sword, and a hammer. While it may not have received widespread recognition upon its initial release, the remastered version is a hidden gem worth discovering for fans of the platforming and hack-and-slash genres. Despite some imperfections, it is a good game that provides an enjoyable experience.

Hades is a fiendishly difficult roguelike that requires multiple attempts to reach the objective. While not fitting the typical mould of a hack-and-slash game, its unique gameplay style that demands quick thinking, flashy dashes, and stylish combo attacks has earned it a seat on this list.
Players will need to be at their best if they want to make it through this devilishly difficult game. The game gets difficult the more you progress, but dying only makes you stronger. For those who love the combination of roguelikes and hack and slash and are seeking a devilish challenge, Hades will fill that need.
That’s it for the list, thank you for reading.
