Following the recent emergence of retro-inspired side-scrolling beat’em ups, the genre has experienced a rapid surge in popularity. Although this revitalization is beneficial for the genre, the 3D beat-em-ups are frequently overlooked or disregarded, and that’s a shame.
The seventh console generation showcased how beat’em up games could transcend the basic side-scrolling style, incorporating intricate mechanics that blended multiple genres. Additionally, these titles featured numerous combos to master and non-stop action that left players buzzing with excitement, making their fingers tingle.
Although the golden age of 3D beat’em ups have come and gone, the genre is not entirely dormant. From time to time, exceptional 3D beat’em up titles emerge, reigniting fans’ passion for the genre and leaving them craving more. We are optimistic that, at the very least, some of the games highlighted below will hopefully receive a remaster in the foreseeable future. (Asura’s Wrath and Anarchy Reigns remaster, anyone?)
Below, you’ll find a compilation of the finest beat’em ups that I’ve personally enjoyed. They are thoroughly engaging, delivering non-stop entertainment from start to finish. Spoiler alert, the list includes a handful of hidden gems waiting to be uncovered, so keep an eye out. Hopefully, you’ll discover something fresh and exciting among these recommendations.

Asura’s Wrath follows the epic adventures of Asura in his quest for revenge against those who ruined his life. Born from an unexpected partnership between CyberConnect2 and Capcom, Asura’s Wrath is one of the greatest 3D beat’em ups one can experience on the PlayStation 3.
Asura’s anger knows no bounds as he unleashes his fury upon hordes of enemies, decimating them with his devastating fists. Whether facing colossal beasts like a hundred-armed Buddha or a towering mammoth, Asura shows no mercy and obliterates everything in his path. And just when you think he’s reached his limit, Asura defies expectations, taking on entire airborne armadas and battling colossal space-bound deities.
In addition to its frenetic combat and immensely gratifying finishing moves, the game also features a selection of Quick Time Events (QTEs) that complement its already intense action. While some players may not appreciate this feature, there’s no denying that it enhances the game’s immersive quality, drawing players deeper into the heart-pumping action.

Anarchy Reigns is the lesser-known follow-up to one of the Wii’s top beat’em up games, Madworld. Diverging from its predecessor’s penchant for graphic violence, Anarchy Reigns opts for a breakneck 3D beat’em up experience.
The sequel introduced two playable characters, Leo and Jack, both of whom play a crucial role in the game’s storyline. While Leo and Jack exhibit distinct playstyles, they share a common trait: the ability to execute devastating combos that decimate their foes, and most importantly, give the player the feeling of badassery.
Grab and hurl your enemies through a solid wall, or seize them and slam them down to the ground. Unleash a freaking double chainsaw attached to your right arm by pressing the shoulder button, and slice through your opponents like a hot knife through butter. There’s plenty to appreciate in Anarchy Reigns, but be forewarned: after completing the game, you may find yourself yearning for a sequel.

Bayonetta continues to pride itself as one of the best examples of a hybrid 3D beat’em up and hack and slash game. The level of creativity that’s been poured into Bayonetta is insane, and it just goes to demonstrate that the genre can transcend expectations when put in the hands of an excellent team.
Players control a powerful witch, Bayonetta in her quest to discover her lost identity. Amidst her venture, she’ll confront menacing angels, vehement beasts and other enemies she’ll tear her deadly heels through.
Equipped with firearms in her hands and feet, Bayonetta annihilates anything in her path through gunfire and brute force. Additionally, she can arm herself with weapons obtained from defeated enemies, which are gorgeous. However, the game’s true brilliance lies in its high-speed gameplay and devastating finishing moves, such as calling forth demons from the underworld to do the carnage for her. It’s safe to say that Bayonetta is the genre’s climax.

One Piece 3: Pirate Warriors is the third game in the action-packed Musou series, set in the world of One Piece. Following the storyline of the original manga up to the Dressrosa arc, players control Monkey D Luffy and his companions as they explore the vibrant world.
if you’re already a fan of the series, then you know what to expect from the rubber-bodied hero. But if you’re new to One Piece, let me fill you in on the incredible abilities of the protagonist, Luffy. Monkey D Luffy possesses a unique rubber-based power that allows him to stretch his entire body, giving him an elastic advantage in battle. With this ability, he can turn his small arms into massive fists, launch his opponents through the air, or transform his tiny legs into powerful giants, stomping anything in his path.
One of the game’s unique features is its Co-Op mode, allowing up to two players to join the adventure locally or online, selecting from a variety of characters. So, if you want a sidekick obliterating on-screen enemies with you, this is the one.

Spider-Man Shattered Dimension is likely the most accurate portrayal of a comic book-style Spider-Man adventure, and it’s worth noting that the game played a significant role in inspiring the creation of Spider-Verse.
Based on the hailed Spider-Man comic book, the game offers players the opportunity to control four different versions of Spider-Man, each originating from unique dimensions featured in the comics. After Spider-Man’s battle with Mysterio causes a disturbance in the dimensions, Madame Web enlists the help of four distinct Spider-Men to restore order and save the day.
Years after its initial release, Shattered Dimensions continues to stand the test of time thanks to the addicting gameplay that allows players to string together impressive combos unique to Spider-Man. The comic-like art style, reminiscent of Ultimate Spider-Man, is the icing on the cake that completes the overall experience. The combination of all these elements, along with the captivating storyline, synergistically enhances the overall experience. Definitely play this one if you’re a Spidey fan!

Captain America: Super Soldier is a shining example of how a movie tie-in video game should be executed. It strikes the perfect balance between adhering to the film’s storyline and not overcomplicating things with extraneous elements from the gaming industry. This makes for a cohesive and enjoyable experience that stays true to the Captain America universe.
Based on the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger, the game puts players in the legendary superhero’s shoes as he battles his nemesis, the villainous Red Skull, and the nefarious organization Hydra. With his glimmering shield, he won’t stop until all of their plans have crumbled to dust.
Armed with his powerful muscles and lethal shield, Captain America pummels anyone who dares to cross his path into oblivion. Each of his jabs lands with a satisfying impact, as the game effectively conveys the sensation of controlling a potent superhero who can take down any adversary with ease. Although the controls may feel somewhat heavy and tank-like at times, Captain America: Super Soldier still stands out as a noteworthy entry in the Marvel Games universe, provided that you can look past its noticeable clunkiness. With the success of Insomniac Games with Spider-Man, here I’m praying they would one day work on a Captain America game instalment.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters, when it first launched, seemed to quickly fade away from the public eye. Perhaps the game’s God of War-like gameplay alongside the simple visuals contributed to its lack of popularity. However, it’s a shame that many overlooked this title, as it offers a truly enjoyable experience, especially with a friend via couch Co-Op.
Released as a movie tie-in and sequel to the 2011 film, Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters blends elements from the hack-and-slash and beat ’em-up genre with rail shooting sequences to create an engaging experience for fans of the PS3. The game’s combination of various gameplay mechanics delivers a powerful experience that draws players into the world of the Green Lantern.
The game’s combat mechanics are simple enough to jump into, but the graphics may not be impressive enough to appeal to everyone. Die-hard Green Lantern fans may be disappointed with the game’s short 6-hour campaign, but those who enjoy replaying games will be rewarded with a fantastic experience since you can pretty much pummel through everything after your second playthrough.

Remember Me sees players running through the futuristic city of Neo Paris, engaging in combat, solving intricate puzzles, and performing various actions. It’s worth noting that Remember Me was born from a special partnership between Capcom and Dontnod — the developers behind Life is Strange.
Assume the role of Nilin, a courageous woman determined to put an end to the malevolent schemes of Memorize Corporation. The combat in Remember Me is outstanding, incorporating beat’em up mechanics that are sure to satisfy genre enthusiasts. As the game’s protagonist, Nilin, players have access to a range of martial art techniques that are both deadly and impressive. If executed correctly, Nilin’s attacks pack a powerful punch, making for an exhilarating gameplay experience.
The cyberpunk atmosphere along with the wealth of sci-fi elements work hand-in-hand to make the experience with Remember Me even better. However, Remember Me’s main selling point isn’t the gameplay, it’s the story. Dontnod once again delivers a story-rich game that you’ll surely remember for a lifetime.

Fist of the North Star, also known as Hokuto no Ken in Japan, has been adapted into various video games, ranging from classic side-scrolling brawlers and fighting games to modern 3D titles. However, one game that may have gone unnoticed is Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage by Koei Tecmo, a Musou-style beat’em up game based on the manga series.
The Raoh arc serves as the foundation for the game’s plot in Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage. Just a few minutes after booting the game, players are immediately thrown into the action, battling countless enemies using a variety of martial art techniques.
Inflicting your fist through hordes of enemies is a gratifying experience, especially when unleashing a string of combos that result in your foes’ demise because the last thing they know: they’re already dead.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows stands out as one of the most ambitious adaptations in the world of comic books. It not only draws inspiration from the source material but also manages to create a game that may spark an interest in the comics. It’s really sad to witness the bankruptcy of the game developers shortly after the game’s release, especially considering the immense potential they showed with Spider-Man.
Web of Shadows places you in the role of the eponymous Spider-Man as he fights against the evil Venom, who is determined to use any means necessary to take down Spidey. The game starts off as a typical superhero adventure, but things quickly take a complicated turn as the story unfolds and infamous villains such as Electro, Rhino, Kingpin, and Tinkerer enter the scene. Of course, Spider-Man won’t take them all down alone since supporting characters like Black Cat, Luke Cage, and Wolverine got his back.
This special instalment in the Spider-Man franchise stands out as one of the best open-world beat’em up games you’ll ever play. It gives players the opportunity to switch between regular the and Symbiote Spider-Man on the fly. Each form comes with its advantages, but it’s widely known that Symbiote Spider-Man is better, faster and stronger. Not only can Spider-Man execute devastating combos and capture enemies with his web-slinging expertise, but he can also lift and throw cars at enemies. A technique that was impressive back then and remains so even today.

Splatterhouse is a reboot of one of Namco’s often-overlooked series, which had its start in the arcade. Although the original Splatterhouse was well-received among side-scrolling game enthusiasts, it didn’t receive enough attention to justify the continuation of the series.
While the reboot may have brought some fresh concepts to the table, the fundamental elements of the original are still present. Assume the role of Rick, a young man who was killed by Dr. Henry West. Luckily, the Mask of Doom happened to be nearby, and upon wearing it, Rick gains extraordinary abilities. Together with the Mask of Doom, Rick embarks on a gory adventure, tearing through demons in order to rescue his girlfriend and destroy the monstrous Dr Henry West.
While the combat in Splatterhouse has room for improvement, the game remains highly addictive and vicious. With his superhuman abilities, Rick effortlessly takes down enemies, and the incorporation of beat’em up mechanics enables him to wield a variety of melee weapons including chainsaws, knives, and pipes. Additionally, Rick can even use his dismembered arm as a weapon, making for a gruesome yet satisfying gameplay experience. If you haven’t had the chance to try it out, it’s never too late to do so.

Sleeping Dogs may have been frequently compared to Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto franchise upon its initial release, but the reality is that the game is distinctly dissimilar from the latter. Assume the role of Wei Shen, a Chinese-American cop who undertakes an undercover mission to raid and infiltrate the Sun On Yee Triad group.
Wei Shen possesses a range of lethal martial arts skills that enable him to effortlessly eliminate a gang of thugs. You have the option to either hurl a thug against a wall or deliver swift punches to their face. If that’s not enough, you can push them into an air vent and watch them pass out. The game offers the ability to perform a variety of lethal finishing moves that will get your adrenaline flowing.
Sleeping Dogs incorporates fundamental components of the open-world genre, allowing you to explore the game’s environment freely, hijack cars, create chaos, and engage in numerous other activities. Nonetheless, the game’s greatest strength lies in its combat, which is exceptionally well-crafted. Definitely check out the game if you love 3D beat’em ups.

Saint Seiya: Sanctuary Battle takes a departure from its predecessors, offering players a beat’em up adaptation of the manga with occasional one-on-one fighting sequences against bosses. The game follows the 12 Golden Saints Story Arc, and the story is surprisingly true to the manga.
At the start, players control Seiya and battle through waves of enemies using powerful combos while learning about each character’s background. As players progress, they can unlock other sagas such as Aiolos Saga, Aiolia Saga, Shaina Saga, Marin Saga, and Ikki Saga, in order, just like the anime and manga. For fans of the show, playing through these sagas will surely elicit some intense nostalgia.
Saint Seiya: Sanctuary Battle has been crafted with great attention to detail. The developers have expertly captured the essence of the manga by choosing to create a beat’em up game. However, if you have fond memories of watching Kung Fu Panda as a child, you might find this game worth trying out.
Loosely inspired by the movie of the same title, the game centres around the brave adventures of Po the Panda, who, together with his companions, sets out on a grand adventure to thwart the nefarious plans of Tai Lung, the evil snow leopard, and his henchmen, who seek to wreak havoc and devastation on their hometown.
