Although the PlayStation 3 did not enjoy the same vast collection of JRPGs as its predecessors, the PS1 and PS2, its library of JRPGs should not be overlooked. It offers some incredible gaming experiences worth grinding your way through alongside your Chocobo.
From excellent high-fantasy adventures like Final Fantasy XIII, and mind-crushing epic stories like NieR to non-stop action JRPGs like Kingdom Hearts, the PlayStation 3 is a welcoming place for fans seeking out anything JRPG-related.
So get ready to embark on a journey through fantastical worlds littered with magic to spell, monsters to slay, and some seriously overpowered haircuts. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran of traditional turn-based battles or a fresh-faced newcomer ready to grind until your eyes glaze over, we’ve got you covered.
And if you’re looking for some intense action, don’t worry – these games have more sword-swinging, spell-casting, and button-mashing than you can shake a Chocobo at. So grab your controller, stock up on healing potions, and get ready for an adventure that will leave you shouting, ‘Kupo!’ in no time.

Folklore marked Game Republic’s second foray into the realm of JRPGs, following their first title Brave Story: New Traveler. Despite being launched less than a year after the release of the PS3, Folklore managed to carve its mark and proved that there was still ample opportunity for excellent action JRPGs on the platform.
Folklore is set in a fictional version of Ireland and the Celtic Otherworld, drawing inspiration from rich Irish mythology. The game features two playable characters, Ellen and Keats, who must work together to solve a 17-year-old murder case that serves as the central mystery driving the game’s narrative.
Folklore is widely considered one of the best exclusives on the PS3, thanks in large part to its imaginative style and fully-realized game areas that exudes charm. The gameplay is a non-stop action experience that allows players to stylishly slay, smash, and vaporize enemies. Every aspect of Folklore brims with charm, making it all the more disappointing that the game has yet to receive a port or remaster.

NieR’s popularity saw a resurgence with the release of NieR Replicant and also the excellent NieR Automata in 2017. Two excellent instalments from the highly underappreciated Drakengard franchise created by Yoko Taro.
NieR is a poignant tale of despair, struggle, and emotional moments. The game puts players in the shoes of a loving father who embarks on a perilous journey through a world fraught with sinister danger in a desperate attempt to find a cure for his sick daughter. Along the way, the father will encounter several companions who will aid him in his quest and help him overcome the many challenges he will face.
Despite being a decade old, the original NieR game remains a potent JRPG on the PS3. It boasts all the hallmarks of a successful title in the genre, including a wealth of content, solid combat mechanics, and a captivating story. And let’s not forget the joy of fishing, which adds a fun and engaging gameplay element. All in all, NieR is an excellent JRPG, and if you’re new to the series, the original game is a great place to start.

Final Fantasy thirteen carries the core elements of its predecessors that made the Final Fantasy franchise beloved amongst JRPGs veterans, while also introducing new features for a breath of fresh air experience. Apart from the magnificent visuals, Final Fantasy thirteen boasts fast-paced gameplay, a sophisticated combat system, and a plethora of engaging mechanics that keep players entertained for hours on end.
In this game, players are immersed in the thrilling adventures of Lightning, a former member of the Cocoon Guardian Corp Army, and her five companions as they embark on a quest to prevent the destruction of Cocoon. Brought together by fate, this group of five courageous adventurers must face a series of challenging trials in order to alter the course of their fate.
Fans of anything JRPG-related will find a few aspects to enjoy about Final Fantasy Thirteen. From the awe-inspiring levels to the deep combat system and the engaging story, there’s surely something to appreciate in the game. However, the lack of open-world exploration in favour of linear levels may turn some people off. Accompanied by the fact that the game suffers from some occasional difficulty spikes that may force players to grind in order to bypass those challenges. However, that doesn’t make this instalment in the series disappointing, as its positives outweigh its negatives.

Eternal Sonata’s strongest assets are its beautiful setting, combat system, and most importantly, the beautiful soundtrack. All of these elements play a pivotal role in making Eternal Sonata a very well-made JRPG, and a recommended one too.
The game’s storyline revolves around the famous Polish romantic pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin, who tragically passed away at the young age of 39 due to tuberculosis. Through the lens of Chopin’s life and music, the game creates a fictional world that he dreams up during his final hours. In this world, Chopin is a playable character alongside others.
With a unique story under its belt, Eternal Sonata is bolstered by a solid combat system that blends traditional turn-based with real-time action. Players are able to issue commands and strategically plan their moves in order to turn the wheel of combat on their side.

Tri-Ace is known for the making of some of the most highly acclaimed JRPGs. Including Star Ocean: The Lost Hope, Valkyrie Profile: Simeria, Radiata Stories and more. Resonance of Fate is a testament to Tri-Ace’s legacy, blending both classic and innovative ideas. The game features a unique tri-attack battle system, which seamlessly transitions between traditional turn-based combat and real-time action. Like Eternal Sonata, but with its own distinct style, players have complete control over their characters and can strategically plan each move to achieve victory or risk defeat.

Persona 5 is the fifth instalment in the renowned Persona series — which is part of Atlus’ prized SMT series — improved upon the many elements initially introduced by past instalments in the series. Consequently, Persona 5 is lauded as the best the series has offered so far.
Persona 5 did more than it could for the series, and that has paid off. The combat system has been completely overhauled, opting for a more dynamic, fast-paced experience than previous instalments. Additionally, your ears will be treated to some of the best soundtracks made by Shoji Meguro, which helps make the experience with Persona 5 much more memorable.
Combat encounters are always exciting, and forming bonds with friends in the outside world is charming. Persona fans shouldn’t miss out on this fantastic game.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch demonstrates once again the incredible creativity of Level-5, a company known for the making of unique and charming JRPGs. Born from a collaboration between two giants; the animation juggernaut Studio Ghibli, and Level-5’s incredible talent, Ni no Kuni is a visually stunning masterpiece.
While the PlayStation 3 enjoyed a multitude of exceptional JRPGs, few managed to be as memorable as Ni no Kuni. Level-5’s previous elements from past works are apparent in the game, but they’ve been improved upon to deliver pretty much what many would consider a spiritual follow-up to games like Dark Cloud 2.
One potential downside to the game is its grind-demanding nature, but with enough time and dedication, players can overcome this challenge and enjoy all that the game has to offer.

Valkyria Chronicles is a unique blend of tactical strategy, turn-based gameplay, and RPG elements that make it stand out as a special series in its own right. Despite that, the game is underrated in the JRPG scene.
The first game in the series, unlike its sequel, offers a challenging tactical RPG experience that puts players’ strategic skills to the test. The game gradually increases in difficulty, with stronger opponents appearing as players progress. Although the game provides guidance during the first quarter of the game, players must rely on their own skills and tactics as they delve deeper into the story. The game’s difficulty may pose a challenge for some players, but it also provides opportunities for them to sharpen their strategic abilities and overcome obstacles.
With its stunning cel-shaded graphics, Valkyria Chronicles is a visually impressive game that offers a rewarding gameplay experience.

Drawing on its predecessor, the 1997 Sega Saturn title Princess Crown, the game follows a Valkyrie princess who becomes entangled in a conflict between the nations of Ragnanival and Ringford over a powerful weapon called the Crystallization Cauldron.
Despite its linear gameplay, Odin Sphere offers a unique and visually captivating experience that is sure to appeal to JRPG fans seeking something different. With a playtime of around 30-40 hours, the game offers a satisfying and immersive experience that showcases Vanillaware’s impressive artistic talent.
Odin Sphere Leftraiser is a high-definition remake of the original game initially released in 2007. It comes with visual improvement and extra new features that make this remake just as great as the original.

Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix is a compilation of two fantastic games; Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and Chain of Memories. A unique crossover between Disney and Square Enix’s Final Fantasy franchise, where beloved characters from both universes come together to overcome obstacles and support one another throughout the series.
Although the original Kingdom Hearts had its shortcomings in terms of combat and level design, it was still an incredible game upon its initial release. The storyline can feel convoluted and complex at times, but the game’s appealing combat mechanics and engaging RPG elements make it a highly enjoyable experience for both newcomers and veterans of the series.
Overall, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix is an excellent compilation if you want to experience two games in one package. It is a JRPG that is sure to delight fans of both the Disney and Final Fantasy series.

Trinity: Souls of Zill O’ll is part of an obscure but beloved JRPG trilogy that many gamers in the West may not have heard of. Despite finding a welcoming audience in Japan, the game has struggled to gain the recognition it deserves in Western markets.
Acting as the third instalment in the series, Souls of Zill O’ll is strictly an action RPG that plays similarly to musou titles produced by Omega Force. The game features a unique three-character party system, allowing the player to switch between characters with different advantages to keep the gameplay fresh and balanced.
The hacking and slashing gameplay will appeal to fans of both the JRPG and hack and slash genre, as it features a potent combat system, a series of combos to master, and several devastating moves that should be experienced to be appreciated.

Drakengard 3, the third instalment in the Drakengard series, is a hybrid of hack-and-slash and action RPG that takes place in a timeline unrelated to the events of the franchise, acting as a prequel. Players control a white-haired girl known as Zero, who seeks to take down her five sisters and enlists the help of a mythical dragon named Mikhail. The reason behind her quest for genocide remains a mystery until players uncover it.
The gameplay of Drakengard 3 shares similarities with Koei Tecmo’s Musou games, as players will find themselves fighting hordes of enemies using different weapons such as knives, spears, combat bracers, and chakrams. The game incorporates role-playing elements as well, allowing Zero to level up her stats and weapons, growing stronger in the face of her foes. In addition to on-foot combat, the game features rail-shooter-style missions where players take control of Mikhail and must shoot down anything that poses a threat.
It’s an incredible game that remains confined to the PlayStation 3. It wouldn’t hurt Square Enix to remaster the entire Drakengard trilogy after the success of NieR Replicant’s remaster. One can only hope.

Ar nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star’s lack of recognition may be attributed to its release after the launch of the PS4, causing it to slip under the radar amidst the many popular JRPGs in the market. it’s a hidden gem in Gust’s repertoire of games, and often overlooked despite the company’s success with its beloved Atelier franchise.
This title marks a departure from their usual formula, with a greater emphasis on storytelling and visual novel elements capable of turning you into a book addict. The game’s unique approach places a heavy emphasis on its cast of characters and their continuous development throughout the course of the game.
Similar to the Ar tonelico series — another JRPG under Gust’s belt— battles are conducted in the form of turn-based combat, albeit with a unique approach that sees the player tackling a mob of enemies on screen. Anyone who’s into underrated JRPGs should definitely check Ar Nosurge, it’s worth sailing through from start to finish.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope is a step above its predecessor, thanks to its real-time battle refinement by incorporating several new features into the mix. One of the standout additions is the Blindside, a useful dodge manoeuvre that proves invaluable during intense battles.
Originally released as an Xbox 360 exclusive, then ported a year after to the PlayStation 3, Star Ocean: The Lost Hope enjoyed a heated competition against juggernauts like Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor, and Monster Hunter. Despite its age, the game still holds up well today with decent graphics and an excellent combat system.
As with any game, Star Ocean: The Last Hope has its share of flaws. The most noticeable one is its subpar voice acting and forgettable storyline. Nevertheless, if you can overlook these issues, The Last Hope is a gem worth adding to your collection.

The Guided Fate Paradox’s unfortunate timing of being released towards the end of the PS3’s lifespan has resulted in its relatively unknown status within the gaming industry. Boasting a complex grid-based gameplay reminiscent of the Disgaea, however, the game manages to stand out on its own with its roguelike structure.
Among the games discussed earlier, The Guided Fate Paradox is the most challenging one, with battles that demand a comprehensive understanding of the game’s mechanics and resources to overcome. While The Guided Fate Paradox can be brutally difficult at times, its endearing plot and whimsical visuals will entice players to keep pushing forward.

Cross Edge is an obscure tactical role-playing game developed by Idea Factory and published by numerous companies, including none other than NIS America. For a publisher with such an array of solid JRPGs under its belt, Cross Edge hasn’t managed to leave a strong presence despite its interesting concept.
At first glance, Cross Edge may appear to be just another run-of-the-mill JRPG, with gameplay mechanics and tropes that you’ve seen before. However, what sets this game apart is its unique cast of characters drawn from various series, such as Darkstalkers, Atelier Marie, and Mana-Khemia 2, which adds an exciting layer of diversity and intrigue to the experience.
But don’t let the cute and cuddly appearances of these characters fool you – the battles in Cross Edge can be intense and unforgiving, with enemies that are more than ready to bring your HP down to zero. Be prepared to give it your all if you want to survive!

White Knight Chronicles 2 marked Level-5’s continuous attempt to establish itself as a major player in the competitive JRPG realm. While the game introduced fresh ideas, this second instalment in the series couldn’t hold a candle against its competitors during its initial release.
White Knight Chronicles II offers a refreshing spin on the JRPG genre with a combination of real-time combat and strategic planning. Despite its ingenious gameplay mechanics, the game is not without its shortcomings. One of the most significant issues is the unresponsive AI, which can fail to detect enemy weaknesses even after multiple commands, potentially leading to a disadvantageous outcome in combat. While this flaw is infrequent, it can be frustrating when it occurs.
Nonetheless, players who overlook this flaw will discover a unique and satisfying gameplay experience. If you end up enjoying this instalment, the prequel on the PSP is a recommended hit as well.
Note: White Knight Chronicles 2 comes loaded with a remastered version of the original game. This is the definitive edition to experience two games in one package.

Fairy Fencer F is a traditional turn-based JRPG developed by Compile Heart and published by NIS America a few weeks before the launch of the PlayStation 4. With many JRPGs in the company’s vault, Fairy Fencer F has to be one of their best.
Although many recommend playing the expanded version, Advent Dark Force, Fairy Fencer F’s original PS3 release should not be overlooked. While the game’s storyline may come off as generic, it more than makes up for this with its endearing cast of characters and fast-paced, engaging combat. Fans of classic turn-based JRPGs will find much to enjoy in Fairy Fencer F’s original incarnation.

Trinity Universe is yet another crossover on this list that comprises two iconic series, Atelier and Disgaea. Compared to the games we’ve mentioned above, Trinity Universe doesn’t bring anything mind-blowing to the mix. However, Its awesome setting, the cast of cute characters and the excellent soundtracks are worthy of praise.
Before you delve into Trinity Universe, players should be aware that Trinity Universe takes a while to reveal it’s potential, so patience is key. Trinity Universe and Cross Edge stand out as some of the most impressive JRPG crossovers to come out of the PS3 era. It’s a shame that this trend hasn’t continued in recent years, as both games showcased the potential for combining beloved franchises in new and exciting ways.

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel may have succeeded at emulating the magic of its predecessors, but for those who want to see the conclusion to the Ar Tonelico franchise, Knell of Ar Ciel is worth a playthrough.
Despite Ar tonelico Qoga’s impressive music score, compelling story, and well-developed characters that players can easily connect with, the gameplay mechanics of its predecessors remain largely unchanged. However, fans of the previous sequels’ combat system will still find some enjoyment in this final instalment of the trilogy.

Battle Princess of Arcadias is the last game on this list of the best PlayStation 3 JRPGs. With gameplay reminiscent of Vanillaware’s Odin Sphere masterpiece, Battle Princess of Arcadias manages to slice its way through as an addicting side-scrolling action game from start to finish.
Nippon Ichi Software’s Battle Princess of Arcadias boasts not only stunning visuals but also a simplistic combat system that even newcomers can easily understand. However, the game’s highlight is its unique army system, which enables players to lead a group of formidable swordsmen into battle against other armies. This feature adds a new layer of strategy to the game and makes for an immersive gaming experience.
Battles can get pretty chaotic on-screen, with multiple effects filling the view. So, if you’re into such type of action, you should check out this hidden gem.
Well, that’s it for the list, folks! Hope you found this list of the best JRPGs on PS3 as helpful as a mage’s healing spell during a boss battle. Until next time, keep grinding and slaying those virtual monsters!
